Biography of Dmitry Ogurtsov
Dmitry Uvarovich Ogurtsov was born on November 15, 1922, in the village of Yurasovo, Selsky District, Oryol Oblast. His family moved to the city of Krasnodon in 1923, where his father worked as a shoemaker and later as a miner. From a young age, Dmitry showed independence and a desire to help his mother with household chores. He was described by his sister, Alexandra Uvarovna, as kind and generous, taking after his father.
In 1931, Dmitry started attending School No. 2 named after S. M. Kirov. He quickly made friends with Victor Subbotin and Vladimir Zagoruiko. He excelled in his studies and dreamt of becoming a military pilot. He primarily read books about brave and fearless individuals and participated in sports competitions.
In 1937, Dmitry and his parents moved to Sakhalin, settling in the village of Arkovo in Alexandrovsk. He enjoyed fishing and hunting during their two-year stay. The family returned to Krasnodon in 1939, where Dmitry worked in the mine and attended evening school. He joined the ranks of the Leninist Komsomol in the same year.
In October 1941, Dmitry was called into service with the Naval Fleet. After completing courses for naval radio operators, he served on a patrol boat at the Novorossiysk Naval Base. In the summer of 1942, he fought as part of the 144th Separate Battalion of the 83rd Marine Brigade in the Krasnodar Territory and Kuban. His comrade, I. E. Konik, described Dmitry as a good friend, an honest and brave soldier who never lost hope during the difficult times.
In late July 1942, Dmitry's battalion was engaged in fierce defensive battles near the city of Temryuk. He was wounded during the defense and found himself surrounded. Despite being captured, he managed to escape. In early September 1942, Dmitry returned to the occupied city of Krasnodon, reestablished contact with his school friends, and joined the underground organization "Young Guard." He constantly sought new ways to fight against the occupiers.
As a radio specialist, Dmitry helped his comrades assemble radio receivers and distributed leaflets according to the headquarters' instructions. He told the truth about the real situation on the front to the population and conducted agitation work among the youth to involve them in the underground organization. Dmitry also collected weapons and participated in attacks on enemy vehicles.
Dmitry Ogurtsov was arrested on January 28, 1943. He spent a few days in the Krasnodon Prison before being transferred to the Rovenkovskaya District Gendarmerie under escort. During one of the work assignments where the prisoners were forced to clear snow, Dmitry attempted to escape but was unsuccessful. He was recaptured and returned to the Rovenki prison.
After enduring brutal and inhumane torture, Dmitry Ogurtsov was executed by the Nazis in the Grimy Forest on February 9, 1943. He was buried in a mass grave of fascism victims in the center of Rovenki in a park named after the "Young Guard." Dmitry Uvarovich Ogurtsov was posthumously awarded the "Partisan of the Patriotic War" Medal of the 1st degree.
