Isla Lang Fisher was born on February 3, 1976, in Muscat, the capital of Oman, a country in Southwest Asia. She is an Australian actress and author. Fisher received her name, Isla, in honor of the Scottish island of Islay. She is the daughter of Scottish parents, and her father worked as a banker for the United Nations. Fisher has four brothers. When she was just nine months old, Fisher and her family moved to Perth, Western Australia. She said she had an "excellent" upbringing in Perth, living a "street life."
Early Career
Fisher began her acting career in Australian television commercials at the age of nine, before landing roles in popular children's shows such as "Bay City" and "Paradise Beach." She attended Methodist Ladies' College (M.L.C) and took leading roles in school productions. At 17, with the support of her mother, Fisher wrote two young adult novels, "Bewitched" and "Seduced by Fame," which became bestsellers. From 1994 to 1997, she played the role of Shannon Reed in the Australian hit soap opera "Home and Away." After leaving the popular show to pursue new endeavors, Fisher joined prestigious theater groups and studied at an art school in Paris. She also continued to participate in pantomimes in the United Kingdom. Fisher toured with Darren Day in the musical "Summer Holiday" and appeared in a London theater production called "Goosey."
Breakthrough and Film Career
Fisher's ambition was to break into the big screen, and in 2002, she played Mary Jane, the love interest of Shaggy Rogers, in the live-action adaptation of the popular animated series "Scooby-Doo." This experience led to Fisher securing an American agent. She then landed a more significant role in the comedy film "Wedding Crashers" in 2005, which earned her a breakthrough performance award at the MTV Movie Awards. As part of the film's promotion, Fisher was crowned the thousandth guest on the Australian talk show "Rove" on August 2, 2005.
In 2006, Fisher portrayed Rebecca, the host of a Manhattan party, in the relationship drama "London," alongside Jessica Biel, Chris Evans, and Jason Statham. In 2007, she appeared in the thriller "The Lookout," starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Matthew Goode. Fisher also played Denise in the comedy "Hot Rod," alongside Andy Samberg. In 2008, Fisher starred with Jason Biggs in the comedy "Definitely, Maybe," and with Ryan Reynolds, Elizabeth Banks, and Abigail Breslin in "Definitely, Maybe." She also voiced a character in the animated film "Horton Hears a Who!" Fisher co-wrote the screenplay for the film "Groupies" and plans to star in the movie alongside Amy Poehler. Fisher resides in Los Angeles, California, and London with her fiancé, American comedian Sacha Baron Cohen. As of March 2007, the couple has not set a wedding date. Fisher converted to Judaism after three years of studying. She has described herself as having "Australian sensibility" and a "laid-back attitude towards life." Her mother and relatives live and work in Athens, Greece, while her father resides in Frankfurt, Germany. On October 19, 2007, Fisher gave birth to her first child, a daughter named Olive, in Los Angeles. "I've never had a hunky boyfriend, so to speak. I don't go for the stereotypical thing. Many people may find someone attractive, while others may not. If that weren't the case, then all our men would have gone to Claudia Schiffer!"
