An Early Life in the Arts

Jennifer Sarah Slate (born March 25, 1982) is an American actress, comedian, and voiceover artist who made a name for herself in Hollywood following her role in the film "Gifted" alongside her then-boyfriend Chris Evans.

Jennifer was born in Milton, Massachusetts, to poet Ron Slate and ceramicist Nancy (née Gilson). She has two sisters, Abigail and Stacey. Of Jewish descent, her grandmother was born in Cuba to a Russian father and Turkish mother. She grew up in France, where she met her Jewish husband and moved to America.

Education and Early Career

Jennifer attended Milton Academy and later graduated from Columbia University in 2004 with a degree in literature. It was during her time at Columbia that she met Gabe Liedman, her future comedic partner. Together, they formed the duo "Gabe & Jenny" and performed weekly on Max Silvestri's "Big Terrific" show. Their sketches were praised by Time Out New York as the best television show of 2008. Slate and Liedman characterized their relationship as a "non-sexual romance," with Liedman once famously saying, "We're like Elaine Benes and George Costanza, only we love each other." They made several television appearances together, including playing detective partners in "Brooklyn Nine-Nine."

Television and Voice Acting

Jennifer Slate's diverse career has spanned television, film, and voice acting. She first appeared on television in 2009 on Jimmy Fallon's "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon." That same year, she joined the cast of "Saturday Night Live" for one season. Due to nerves during her first episode, "Biker Chick Chat," she uttered an expletive that accidentally made it to air but was later bleeped out for reruns. During her time on the show, Slate portrayed Kristen Stewart, Lady Gaga, Ashley Olsen, Olympia Snowe, and a character named Tina-Tina Cheneuse, a salesperson who offers unique doorbells, car alarms, and alarm clocks. While Slate's sketches received positive reviews, the show ultimately did not renew her contract for future seasons. Nonetheless, she remained in demand on television, with guest appearances in "30 Rock," "Ugly Americans," "Raising Hope," and "Bob's Burgers."

In August 2010, Jennifer made her debut as a writer. She co-wrote and voiced the animated short film "Marcel the Shell with Shoes On" with her friend Dean Fleischer-Camp. The film featured a seashell named Marcel who wears miniature pink shoes. It premiered at AFI FEST, where it won the award for Best Animated Short Film. Slate and Fleischer-Camp continued to develop the character into a children's book and animated series.

Film Career

Jennifer Slate's film career took off in 2011 when she was cast in "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" as Dave's love interest. She went on to voice Ted's mother in "The Lorax" and had a supporting role in "This Means War" starring Tom Hardy, Chris Pine, and Reese Witherspoon. She also joined the cast of the Showtime series "House of Lies" alongside Ben Schwartz, Don Cheadle, and Kristen Bell.

In 2014, Slate starred in the comedy-drama "Obvious Child" as a comedian who becomes pregnant by a casual acquaintance and must decide whether to have an abortion. The film earned her the Critics' Choice Award for Best Actress in a Comedy, the Breakout Award at the Newport Beach Film Festival, the Virtuoso Award at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, and the Best Comedic Actress Award at the Women Film Circle Awards.

Personal Life

Jennifer Slate married director and "Marcel the Shell with Shoes On" collaborator Dean Fleischer-Camp in September 2012. They divorced in May 2016 after four years of marriage. Within a month, Slate began dating Chris Evans, her co-star in "Gifted," and the couple made their relationship public at the premiere of "The Secret Life of Pets." However, their relationship ended less than a year later in February 2017 due to conflicting work schedules. The couple briefly reconciled in the fall of that year but split again in March 2018.

Recent Projects and Future Endeavors

Jennifer Slate has several upcoming projects in post-production. She will appear as Dr. Dora Skirth in the action film "Venom," starring Tom Hardy, Woody Harrelson, and Michelle Williams. She will also reprise her voice role as Gidget in the upcoming sequel to "The Secret Life of Pets."

Slate actively engages with her fans on social media platforms such as Instagram and Twitter, where she shares glimpses of her life off-screen, including her fitness routine, friendships, art, and photoshoots.
