Ismael Haniyeh: Prime Minister of the Palestinian National Authority
Early Life and EducationIsmael Haniyeh, the Prime Minister of the Palestinian National Authority, was born in the refugee camp of As-Shati in Gaza, where he still resides. He pursued a philological education at the Islamic University of Gaza, where he became active in the "Islamic Bloc," the student wing of the Muslim Brotherhood, while also leading the student council.
Political Activism and Imprisonment
During the First Intifada (Palestinian uprising) from 1984-1987, Haniyeh played a key role in the establishment of Hamas, an Islamist militant organization. In the 1980s, he was imprisoned in Israel three times for his leadership in Hamas's military wing. In 1992, he was deported by Israeli authorities to southern Lebanon.
Leadership Roles in Hamas
Upon his return, Haniyeh continued his work at the Islamic University as head of the administrative council. In 1997, he became the head of the office of Hamas's spiritual leader, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, who was assassinated in March 2004. After Yassin's death, Haniyeh emerged as the "number two" in Hamas's hierarchy and the leader of the movement in the Gaza Strip.
Assassination Attempt and Pragmatic Stance
In September 2003, Haniyeh survived an assassination attempt when the building where he was meeting with other Hamas leaders was bombed by an Israeli military aircraft. He has a reputation among Hamas leaders as a pragmatist, seeking to balance Hamas's ideological goals with the practicalities of governance.
