Early Life and Conversion
István I (Stephen I, István the Great), the first king of the Kingdom of Hungary from the Árpád dynasty, was born between 970 and 975. As a child, he was known by his pagan name "Vajk," meaning "hero." Upon his baptism, he was given the name Stephen (István in Hungarian).

Rise to Power
Afterward, István's ascension to the throne was supported by Pope Sylvester II in 1000, solidifying his authority with spiritual legitimacy. He became the first king of Hungary, elevating the nation's diplomatic standing.
István the Great's Reign
Like Charlemagne in France and Vladimir the Sun in Kievan Rus', István the Great played a pivotal role in Hungary's history. He implemented administrative reforms, replacing tribal divisions with counties. Additionally, he reformed the economy and abolished slavery. István also codified Hungarian laws and promoted the spread of Christianity, leading to his canonization by the Catholic Church after his death in 1038.
Saintly Legacy
For his contributions to Hungary, István I became known as István the Saint, the patron saint of the country. His feast day, celebrated on August 20th, is a major national holiday in Hungary.
