Life of Yemelyan Pugachev
Early Life and CareerYemelyan Pugachev, a Yaik Cossack, was born in the year 1740. In 1766, he became a military elder (voiskovoi starshina). A year later, he was elected as a deputy to the Legislative Commission from the Yaik Cossack army.
Traubenberg Rebellion
In January 1772, Pugachev took the side of the senior officers during the Traubenberg Rebellion. This resulted in his near-fatal encounter during the execution of General Traubenberg and the army ataman, Tambovtsov. Pugachev was subsequently imprisoned until the arrival of General Freiman's punitive expedition in June.
Pugachev's Rebellion
During the Pugachev Rebellion, Pugachev and Mikhail Borodin arrived in Orenburg on October 4, 1773, and participated in its defense against the rebels. After the siege was lifted, Pugachev joined in the search and punitive expeditions against the Pugachevite forces.
Ataman of the Ural Cossacks
Following Borodin's death in February 1775, Pugachev was appointed as the ataman of the Yaik Cossack army, which was renamed the Ural Cossack army. He was also promoted to the rank of colonel. Pugachev held the position of ataman until his demise on October 1, 1785.
