Biography of Ivan Arendarenko

Ivan Arendarenko was born on October 12, 1921, in the village of Shilovka in the Reshetilovka district of the Poltava region, in a large peasant family. His father, Ivan Evstafyevich Arendarenko (1879 - 1965), participated in the Russo-Japanese and First World Wars as an artilleryman, and was skilled in various trades such as farming, gardening, beekeeping, and carpentry. His mother, Maria Onufrievna Arendarenko (1889 - 1926), tragically passed away when Ivan was young. Ivan married Lyubov Petrovna Arendarenko (born in 1921) and they had two daughters, Dina Ivanovna Tomushevskaya (born in 1947) and Natalya Ivanovna Arendarenko (born in 1957).

Early Military Career

When Ivan was conscripted into the army in March 1941, he expressed his desire to serve in the artillery, following in his father's footsteps. He was sent to the 678th Light Artillery Regiment's school in Kramatorsk. Ivan was a diligent student and enjoyed his military training, which would shape his almost 40-year career in the army. After three months of training, he was sent to the front as the commander of a reserve artillery unit. Ivan fought on the frontlines for four years without being injured or affected by illness, even in harsh conditions of extreme cold and muddy terrain. He received his baptism of fire in the battle near the city of Boguslav, where he served as a gunner. The artillery unit, under his direction, successfully fired upon advancing enemy troops until an enemy airstrike damaged their equipment. After a month of serving in the infantry, Ivan and his comrades reunited with 122-millimeter howitzers. They fought bravely until reaching the well-known Prokhorovka.

Heroic Actions

On a freezing morning on January 12, 1942, a large group of enemy soldiers appeared on the road, advancing under the cover of three vehicles. The battery commander ordered Ivan Arendarenko to position the artillery on the road. Ivan, as the gunner, accurately fired upon the enemy vehicles using direct aiming. The enemy machines caught fire, and the infantry was scattered, leaving dozens of corpses in the snow. The enemy attack was thwarted. Ivan and his entire detachment witnessed the immense power of artillery. This battle earned Ivan his first and most cherished award, the Medal "For Courage".

Post-War Career

After the war, Ivan Arendarenko graduated from the Higher Artillery Officer School in Leningrad and the Military Artillery Command Academy. He served in various positions within the 29th Guard Latvian Rifle Brigade and the Kiev Military District. He held the rank of lieutenant colonel and colonel while serving as an instructor at the Penza Higher Artillery Engineering School and the M.V. Frunze Military Academy, where he shared his extensive combat experience with cadets and students. He contributed to the development of educational materials on artillery and tactics, which were effectively used in the training process.

Later Life and Legacy

In 1978-1980, Ivan Ivanovich Arendarenko served as the Chief of Missile Forces and Artillery of an army corps in the Siberian Military District, and he was promoted to the rank of major general. After retiring from the military in 1980, he continued his professional career as the Chief of Civil Defense Staff at the Moscow Institute of Water Transport Engineers (now known as the Academy). He also taught military affairs and earned the title of associate professor.

To this day, Ivan Arendarenko considers it his patriotic duty to speak about courage and heroism at schools and other youth venues. He actively participates in the work of the Moscow Club of Heroes of the Soviet Union. For over ten years, Ivan has held the position of Assistant General Director for Propaganda and Agitation at the School of Courage.

In his free time, Ivan enjoys cross-country skiing and fishing. He has a love for literature and classical music and enjoys taking walks in the forest, especially during mushroom season. Ivan also takes pleasure in gardening and tending to his garden.

Ivan Arendarenko currently resides in Moscow. He is a decorated Hero of the Soviet Union, having been awarded the Orders of Lenin, the Red Banner, and the Patriotic War of the 1st and 2nd degrees, as well as three Orders of the Red Star, and several other medals, including foreign ones.
