Early Life and Education

Ivan Bakanov was born in the city of Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine. He attended school alongside Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who later became the president of Ukraine. Bakanov graduated from the Hetman Kyiv National Economic University in 1997 and the Academy of Labor, Social Relations, and Tourism in 2006, earning a degree in Law, Advocacy, and Prosecution.

Business Career

From 2013 to 2019, Bakanov held leadership positions at "Kvartal 95" and "Studio Kvartal-95," production companies closely associated with Zelenskyy. He also served as the chairman of the "Servant of the People" political party during the 2017-2019 election campaign.

Political Appointments

In May 2019, President Zelenskyy appointed Bakanov as First Deputy Chairman of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), overseeing anti-corruption and organized crime investigations. He was subsequently appointed as Acting Chairman of the SBU and then as Chairman by the Verkhovna Rada in August 2019.

Member of the Security and Defense Council

Bakanov was appointed to the National Anti-Corruption Policy Council in July 2019. In 2022, he became a member of the Headquarters of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, a key decision-making body during the Russian-Ukrainian War.

Suspension

On July 17, 2022, Bakanov was suspended from his duties as SBU Chairman by President Zelenskyy.

Military Rank

Bakanov was granted the rank of Lieutenant in May 2019 to facilitate access to classified information.

Family

Bakanov is married to Oksana Lazarenko, a Russian citizen. They have one son, Artur.
