Hockey Career
Early Years and NHL DraftIvan Baranka, a professional Slovak hockey player, began his career in Slovakia with MHK Dubnica nad Váhom. In 2003, he was selected 50th overall in the second round of the NHL draft by the New York Rangers.
North American Experience
Baranka spent two seasons with the Everett Silvertips (WHL) before joining the Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL) for three seasons. He made his NHL debut with the New York Rangers on November 21, 2007, against the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he recorded his first point with an assist on a Colton Orr goal.
KHL and Return to Slovakia
In 2008, Baranka signed with Spartak Moscow (KHL), but missed several games in his first season due to injuries. In the 2009/10 season, he set a Spartak record for points by a defenseman with 32 (10+22). This record was later broken by Matt Gilroy in December 2016.
Russia, Slovakia, and Return to Russia
In 2012, Baranka transferred to Salavat Yulaev Ufa. He was traded back to Spartak Moscow in 2013 after his contract was terminated. Soon after, he signed a one-year deal with Avangard Omsk.
Current Club
Baranka currently plays for HC Vítkovice Steel in the Czech Extraliga.
