Ivan Desny was born on December 28, 1922, in Beijing, China, to a Russian father and a Swedish mother. His father was employed as a French consular officer. Desny spent his formative years in various cities around the world, including Tehran, Washington, D.C., Paris, and Brisbane.
World War II and Internment
During World War II, Desny was incarcerated in a Nazi labor camp due to his Russian ancestry. After the war, he enrolled in drama classes under the tutelage of René Simon.
Early Career
Desny began his film career as a set designer. However, he soon transitioned to acting, primarily appearing in German and French films.
