Early Life and Education
Ivan Glasenberg, the CEO of Swiss company "Glencore International," was born in 1957 in Johannesburg, South Africa. His father, Samuel Glasenberg, was a bag and luggage manufacturer and importer from Lithuania, while his mother, Blanche Glasenberg, was born and raised in South Africa. The family settled in Illovo, one of the prestigious suburbs of Johannesburg. During his youth, Ivan excelled in sports and became the national junior champion in racewalking by the age of 20. He also represented Israel in this sport. To this day, Glasenberg maintains his fitness through daily swimming and running routines. He is married and has two children.
Career
Glasenberg obtained a bachelor's degree in Commerce and Accounting from the University of the Witwatersrand, one of the top universities in South Africa. He then worked for five years at the accounting firm "Nexia Levitt Kirson." In 1983, he earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Southern California. In 1984, Glasenberg started working at "Glencore International" in the coal department for South Africa and Australia. From 1989 to 1990, he managed the company's offices in Hong Kong and Beijing, becoming the head of the coal department in 1991. In 2002, Glasenberg was appointed as the CEO of the company.
Key Figure at Glencore
In 2005, the magazine "BusinessWeek" named Glasenberg as one of the key figures in the elite circle close to Marc Rich, the founder of "Glencore" (formerly known as "Marc Rich & Co."). Marc Rich was a billionaire who faced charges of tax evasion and an illegal deal with Iran, but he was later pardoned by the then-President of the United States, Bill Clinton. Currently, "Glencore" is the corporate successor of "Marc Rich & Co." In April 2012, it was reported that Glasenberg holds over 15% of "Glencore" shares, making him the 20th richest billionaire in the mining industry. According to Forbes, his net worth is estimated at $7.3 billion.
