A Life of Service: The Biography of General Major Vasily Afanasievich
Early Life and EducationVasily Afanasievich was born in 1902 into an orphaned family in Sokolskoe village, Kostroma Governorate (now Lukhsky District, Ivanovo Oblast). Despite humble beginnings, he completed two grades at a church school and worked in a teahouse and a textile factory.
Military Career
Civil War and Post-War ServiceIn 1919, Vasily joined the Red Army during the Russian Civil War. After the war, he returned to his hometown and continued working in a factory. In 1922, he became a political instructor in the 22nd Ivanovo-Voznesensk Food Detachment and later graduated from the Ivanovo-Voznesensk Infantry School.
Pre-World War II Service
In 1925, Vasily became a commander in the Red Army, holding roles as a platoon commander, chief of chemical service of a regiment, and military commissar of a training tank battalion. In 1937, he fought in Spain as part of the International Brigades.
World War II
At the outset of World War II, Vasily served as the head of the political department of the 5th Airborne Brigade. In December 1942, he was promoted to General Major. From June 1943, until the end of the war, he was a member of the Military Council of the 47th Army, participating in the Battle of the Caucasus, the liberation of Warsaw, and the capture of Berlin.
Post-War Career
After the war, Vasily served as the head of the political department of the Transcaucasian Military District.
