Ivan Andreyevich Shamshin
Ivan Andreyevich Shamshin was a distinguished Soviet military leader and a Lieutenant General of artillery. He played a significant role in organizing the practical use of "Katyusha" rocket launchers during World War II.
Early Life and Education
Ivan Shamshin was born on May 15, 1904, in the village of Klintsovka, Russia. He received his education at the Plekhanov Institute, a military училище (military school), and the Frunze Military Academy. He also attended the VAK Academy of the General Staff and the VAK Artillery Academy.
Military Career
Pre-World War IIShamshin joined the Red Army in 1921. He started his career as a clerk in his hometown and rose through the ranks, serving in various positions in the Privolzhsky Military District. In 1934, he became a division commander in the Far East.
World War II
During World War II, Shamshin played a pivotal role in the development and use of rocket artillery. As commander of the 9th Separate Guards Mortar Regiment, he was instrumental in introducing the "Katyusha" rocket launchers into combat. On October 6, 1941, the regiment's first salvo of "Katyushas" destroyed numerous German tanks and artillery pieces, marking a major breakthrough in the war.
Shamshin also led the 2nd Army Operational Group of the General Headquarters of Mortars (GMC) on the Western Front. He fought in key battles such as those around Moscow, Stalingrad, Kursk, and Berlin.
Post-World War II
After the war, Shamshin held various commands, including Deputy Commander of Artillery of the Group of Forces in Germany, Deputy Commander of Artillery of the Pribaltic, Odessa, and South-Ural Military Districts. He was also a senior military advisor in Bulgaria and Deputy Chief of Rocket Troops and Artillery of the USSR Ministry of Defense.

Shamshin received numerous awards for his achievements during World War II, including:
