Early Life and EducationIvan Ivanovich Tsapenko was born on November 13, 1922, in Voskresensk, Russia. He completed seven grades of school and attended a vocational training school, where he honed his skills as a modeler.
Military Career
Serpuchov Aviation SchoolIn 1940, Tsapenko joined the Red Army and enrolled in the Serpuchov Aviation School, where he trained on the I-15bis fighter aircraft. Upon graduating, he was assigned to the 5th Fighter Aviation Regiment of the Baltic Fleet's 61st Aviation Brigade.
Early War Experience
On June 22, 1941, Tsapenko embarked on his first combat mission. He swiftly distinguished himself in combat, engaging in reconnaissance, bombing, and ground attack missions. He also provided cover for the Baltic Fleet's ships and the city of Leningrad.
Heroic Exploits
Throughout the war, Tsapenko demonstrated exceptional courage and skill in numerous aerial battles. He was credited with personally shooting down 13 enemy aircraft and assisting in the destruction of 11 more. For his valor and service, he was awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union on July 22, 1944.
Leadership and Commendation
Tsapenko progressed through the ranks, serving as flight commander, squadron commissar, and deputy commander for political affairs. He earned a reputation for his ability to lead his men effectively and provide cover for his subordinates.
In one notable incident, Tsapenko rescued squadron commander Alexander Kabekov from a desperate situation against German FW-190 fighters. He skillfully intervened, shooting down the lead enemy aircraft and forcing the others to retreat.
Air Force General
After the war, Tsapenko continued to serve in the Navy. He graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1955 and the General Staff Academy in 1960. He eventually rose to the rank of Lieutenant General of Aviation before retiring in 1985.
