Biography of Mike Melvill

Early Life and Education
Mike Melvill was born in 1942 in the town of Kloof, near Durban. He attended Hilton College in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. While he did not excel academically, he had a passion for rugby, gymnastics, shooting, and model aircraft. From a young age, his dream was to become a pilot.

Career in Aviation
At the age of 18, Melvill married his high school sweetheart, Sally Smith. The couple moved from South Africa to Scotland and later relocated to the United States. In the U.S., Melvill worked on aircraft design under the guidance of Burt Rutan, who later gained fame as a pilot after completing the first non-stop circumnavigation of the world. Melvill and Rutan collaborated in a small company called Scale Composites, where Melvill eventually became the vice president as the company grew.

The SpaceShipOne Flight
Melvill's greatest achievement came when he piloted the SpaceShipOne rocket plane to an altitude of 100 kilometers, officially entering space. This historic flight not only earned him recognition in the United States but also in Africa. He is hailed as an "African hero of space" alongside South African citizen Mark Shuttleworth, who became the first space tourist in 2002 with a flight from the Baikonur Cosmodrome.

Personal Life
Following his spaceflight, Melvill's wife called his sister, Rosemary, in Durban and said, "Mike was very excited, his knees were even shaking, but otherwise, the flight went perfectly." Melvill's passion for aviation and his determination to fulfill his dream of becoming a pilot are the defining characteristics of his life and career.
