Mikhail Ivanovich Sementsov: A Renowned Soviet Fighter Ace
Early YearsMikhail Ivanovich Sementsov was born on September 26, 1917, in Nikolskaya Sloboda, Ukraine. As a child, he moved with his family to the Belarusian village of Ilyich. After completing his secondary education, he worked as a mechanic at a spinning factory and later at a railway in Gomel.
Passion for Aviation
Sementsov's passion for aviation ignited while attending the Gomel Aeroclub. Determined to become a pilot, he joined the Red Army in 1938 and was sent to the Odessa Military Aviation School for Pilots.
World War II
Sementsov's military career began in 1941, when he was assigned to the 40th Fighter Aviation Regiment. He saw action in the Donbas, the Caucasus, the Kursk Bulge, Ukraine, Poland, and Germany.
Gallantry and Recognition
During the war, Sementsov flew 270 combat missions and participated in 69 air battles. He was credited with shooting down 12 enemy aircraft individually and 9 in collaboration with his fellow pilots. In recognition of his bravery, he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on September 28, 1943.
Notable Aerial Battles
On September 1943, Sementsov performed a daring act of ramming an enemy aircraft during the liberation of Kiev. Despite being injured in the explosion, he managed to parachute to safety.
During the Battle of Kursk, Sementsov and his squadron commander faced an overwhelming enemy force of 16 German fighters. Despite the odds, they managed to shoot down two enemy planes and emerge unscathed.
Final Sacrifice
On February 12, 1945, Sementsov was killed in an air battle while protecting a squadron of bombers attacking an enemy airfield in Silesia.
Legacy
Sementsov's bravery and skill made him an exceptional fighter pilot. He is remembered as a skilled tactician and an unwavering defender of his homeland. His name is forever etched in the annals of military history, and he remains an inspiration to generations of aviators.
Memorials and Honors
Sementsov was posthumously listed as a member of the personal composition of the N-th Aviation Unit by the Minister of Defense of the USSR in 1985.
A Red Corner dedicated to his memory was established in the squadron he commanded.
