Early Life and Political Career

Ivanoe Bonomi was an Italian socialist politician who played a significant role in Italy's political landscape during the early 20th century. He was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for Mantua in 1909 as a member of the Italian Socialist Party (ISP).

Split with the ISP and First World War

In 1912, Bonomi was expelled from the ISP and established the Reformist Socialist Party, which supported Italy's participation in World War I on the side of the Entente. During the war, he served as Minister of Public Works from 1916 to 1917 and as Minister of War in 1920.

Premiership and Resignation

In 1921, Bonomi became Prime Minister of Italy, leading a coalition government. However, the coalition collapsed in 1922, and Bonomi resigned on February 26. Mussolini's rise to power led Bonomi to withdraw from politics.

Resistance and Second Premiership

During World War II, Bonomi joined the Resistance movement. After the overthrow of fascism in 1943, he became the leader of the movement. On June 18, 1944, he was appointed Prime Minister for the second time, as well as Minister of Foreign Affairs. He led Italy through the final stages of the war against fascism.

Post-War Career

Bonomi resigned as Prime Minister in November, but British Prime Minister Winston Churchill persuaded him to remain as Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior. He resigned the premiership on June 19, 1945, after the war ended. Bonomi continued to be politically active, serving on the Constitutional Assembly's Peace Treaties Committee and representing Italy at meetings of Foreign Ministers until 1946.

Senate Presidency and Later Years

In 1948, Bonomi was elected President of the Italian Senate, a position he held until his death. He was also the honorary president of his party.
