Early Life and Tennis Career

Ivo Karlović, a Croatian tennis player, was born on February 28, 1979, in Zagreb, Croatia. Despite neither of his parents being athletes, his older sister, Anna, inspired him to take up the sport at the age of six. Despite his exceptional height, Karlović had no intentions of pursuing other sports, although he still enjoys playing basketball.

At the age of twenty-one, Karlović turned professional. His early career was marked by limited mobility and a preference for baseline play. However, his powerful serve, often resulting in aces, gave him an advantage, especially on grass courts.

Wimbledon Breakthrough

In 2003, Karlović's breakthrough occurred at Wimbledon. Ranked 203rd at the time, he stunned defending champion Lleyton Hewitt in the first round, earning him the nicknames "Karlo the Great" and "Gulliver." Despite being eliminated in the third round, Karlović's success proved to be no fluke.

Continued Success and Career Highlights

The following year, Karlović reached the fourth round of Wimbledon, defeating top-ranked players and eventually falling to Roger Federer. In 2005, he defeated Hewitt again and reached the ATP Tour final. That same year, at Wimbledon, he set a record with 51 aces in a match.

In 2007, Karlović won his first ATP title and recorded the second-highest number of aces in tennis history, behind his compatriot Goran Ivanišević. He finished the year ranked 22nd in the ATP rankings. In 2008, he reached his career-high ranking of 14th in the world.

Later Career

Throughout the late 2000s and early 2010s, Karlović continued to set records for aces served. However, his overall success fluctuated. In 2011, he set a world record for serving speed at 251 km/h in the Davis Cup final.

In 2013, Karlović suffered a virus-induced loss of consciousness on the court, threatening his career. However, he made a remarkable recovery, rising from 77th to 33rd in the rankings within a year.

Recent Years and Legacy

In recent years, Karlović has faced criticism for his slow mobility. Nonetheless, he remains a respected veteran and has established himself as one of the greatest serve-and-volley players in tennis history.

As of 2023, Karlović's career highlights include:

4th round of the Australian Open (2019)
4th round of the US Open (2016)
Challenger title in Canada (2018)
Davis Cup (runner-up in 2016)
