Biography of Yvonne Elliman

Yvonne Elliman was born on December 29, 1951, in Honolulu, Hawaii. During her school years, she sang in a group called "We Folk" before moving to London. In 1969, she performed in London clubs on Kings Road and Chelsea, where she was discovered by Rice and Webber, who offered her the role of Mary Magdalene in "Jesus Christ Superstar," thus introducing her to the public. She appeared both in the film and the Broadway production of the show. This role also gave her her first hit single, "I Don't Know How To Love Him," in 1972, marking her debut with Polydor.

Collaboration with Eric Clapton

Yvonne Elliman met and married Bill Oakes, the president of RSO, while performing in the Broadway production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Through Bill, she was introduced to Eric Clapton and invited to be a backing vocalist for the single "I Shot The Sheriff." She then signed a contract with RSO and released her solo album "Rising Sun," produced by Steve Cropper. Her next album, "Love Me," reached the UK Top 10 Hit. In 1977, she recorded the soundtrack for "Saturday Night Fever" with the Bee Gees.

Later Career

In the following years, Yvonne Elliman focused on session work, although in 1980 she recorded a duet with Stephen Bishop. She continued her collaboration with Eric Clapton from 1974 to 1996. In 1995, she released "The Very Best of Yvonne Elliman," followed by "The Best of Yvonne Elliman" in 1997.
