Edie Gormezano, better known as Edie Gorme, was born on August 16, 1931, in The Bronx, New York City. Her immigrant parents hailed from Sicily and Turkey, and she grew up in a working-class neighborhood. After graduating high school, she worked as a translator for the United Nations before pursuing her singing career.

Gorme's breakthrough came in 1950 when she performed with Tommy Tucker's Orchestra and later with Dick Noel. Her recordings drew attention and led to her joining a big band previously led by Glenn Miller. In 1952, she released her first solo album on the Coral label.

Fate intervened in 1957 when Gorme appeared on "The Tonight Show" and met her future husband, Steve Lawrence. They married in Las Vegas and became known for their musical partnership and witty stage banter. Together, they won a Grammy Award in 1960 for their album "We Got Us."

As a solo artist, Gorme achieved success with songs such as "If He Walked Into My Life" from the Broadway musical "Mame" and "What Did I Have That I Don't Have?" from "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever." She also appeared in several television shows, including "The Carol Burnett Show" and "The Nanny."

In addition to her English-language music, Gorme found success in the Spanish-language market. She recorded several albums with the popular trio Los Panchos, resulting in a series of hit singles.
