Early Life and Education
Ivy Taylor was born on June 17, 1970, in Brooklyn, New York. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in American Studies from Yale University in 1992 and a Master of City and Regional Planning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1998.
Career in City Planning
In 1999, Taylor moved to San Antonio and began working at the San Antonio Housing Authority. She subsequently held various positions with the San Antonio Planning Commission.
Mayor of San Antonio
In July 2014, then-San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro resigned his post to become the United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Ivy Taylor was sworn in as Mayor Pro Tem of San Antonio on July 22, 2014.
On May 9, 2015, Taylor was elected Mayor of San Antonio, narrowly defeating independent candidate Leticia Van de Putte. She became the first African American woman to hold the office in San Antonio's history and the first African American woman to serve as mayor of a major city in the United States.
