Early Life and Military Career

Zeev Elkin was born in Jerusalem on April 30, 1943. He served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as part of the Nahal Brigade, where he commanded a tank company and rose to the rank of Rav Seren (equivalent to Major) upon his discharge.

Mayor of Kiryat Gat and Educational Pursuits

After leaving the IDF, Elkin became the director of a high school in Kiryat Gat. From 1986 to 1996, he served as the Mayor of Kiryat Gat.

Entry into Politics

In 1996, Elkin was elected to the Knesset (Israel's parliament) for the 14th term on the Likud Party list. He became a member of the Knesset for the 15th term after Moshe Katsav was elected President of Israel, as he was next in the party's list of candidates.

Ministerial Roles in Likud

On March 5, 2003, Elkin became Deputy Defense Minister of Israel in Ariel Sharon's government. In 2005, he left Likud to join the newly formed Kadima Party.

Ministerial Roles in Kadima

On January 18, 2006, Elkin was appointed Minister of Construction and Minister of Agriculture. In 2006, he was named Minister of Immigration and Absorption after being elected to the 17th Knesset on the Kadima Party list (15th place). In 2007, he was appointed Minister of Construction once again.

Later Political Career

Elkin was elected to the 18th Knesset (6th place on the Kadima Party list) and served in the opposition. He remained a member of the Knesset until his death in 2021.

Personal Life

Zeev Elkin was married and had three children.
