Biography of Petre Roman
Early Life and Political CareerPetre Roman is a Romanian politician and an active participant in the Romanian Revolution of 1989. He served as the Prime Minister in the administration of Ion Iliescu but was removed from his position in 1991 during the miners' riots. Roman claimed that the riots were intentionally organized by former communists within Iliescu's circle to sabotage the reforms he was implementing as the Prime Minister.

Petre Roman, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania, aims to bring an end to his country's perpetual economic backwardness in Europe. Another goal of his is to prevent the return of left-wing parties to power in the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections. At 54 years old, Roman is the leader of the Democratic Party, the second-largest party in the ruling centrist coalition. He has decided to run for president in the elections scheduled for November. His most likely opponent will be Ion Iliescu, a 70-year-old former communist and the first president of Romania after the fall of Nicolae Ceausescu's dictatorship. The left-wing parties last held power in Romania from 1990 to 1996. The current head of state, Emil Constantinescu, has no plans to participate in the elections.

After remaining in opposition until 1996, Roman returned to the cabinet of ministers. With his education in France and fluency in multiple languages, Roman envisions the future of his country solely within the framework of the European Union. Meanwhile, the confident and charismatic minister has attracted voters by recently completing a three-kilometer swim across the Danube River.
