Early Life and Influences
Born in 1969 in London, Ontario, John Prine Cormier began his musical journey at the tender age of five, teaching himself to play guitar. By the age of nine, he had triumphed over three dozen older competitors in his first music competition. Cormier's extraordinary talent extended to a wide range of instruments, including the guitar, violin, mandolin, and banjo.
Cormier credits country and bluegrass icons like Chet Atkins and Doc Watson as his inspiration for learning the guitar. He believes that the guitar is one of the most expressive instruments available.
Musical Beginnings
At the age of 16, Cormier released his first album, a collection of instrumental bluegrass music. He embarked on a performance tour of festivals in the United States, leading him to relocate to the US and become a session musician. Cormier shared the stage with renowned artists such as Waylon Jennings, Marty Stuart, and Earl Scruggs.
Higher Education and Development
In 1989, Cormier enrolled in Northeast Mississippi Junior College, one of just three North American institutions offering a program specializing in bluegrass. There, he honed his skills on the piano and dobro.
Return to Canada and Acclaim
Upon his return to Canada, Cormier has released 11 award-winning albums in the past decade. He has garnered numerous accolades, including 12 East Coast Music Association Awards, a Canadian Folk Music Award, and five Music Nova Scotia Awards. Cormier has also been nominated for a Juno Award.
Performance and Touring
Cormier is an active performer, gracing the stages of festivals, theaters, and orchestras around the globe as a guest artist. He performs upwards of 250 shows annually.
Musical Style and Inspiration
Cormier describes himself as "a young man with an old soul." His music blends bluegrass, folk, and Celtic influences, resulting in a unique and captivating sound. Each of his songs tells a story, often based on real-life events. Cormier finds inspiration in unexpected moments and relies on his instincts to pen his lyrics.
