Jaak Aaviksoo: A Life Dedicated to Science and Politics
Early Life and EducationJaak Aaviksoo was born in 1954 in Estonia. He completed secondary school in 1971 and went on to pursue higher education at the University of Tartu. In 1976, he graduated with honors in theoretical physics.
Academic Career
After graduating, Aaviksoo embarked on an academic career. He held various research positions at the Institute of Physics at the Estonian Academy of Sciences from 1976 to 1981. In 1981, he earned a doctorate in physics from the University of Tartu.
From 1981 to 1992, Aaviksoo conducted research and taught as a visiting professor at prestigious institutions such as the Novosibirsk Institute of Physics, the Max Planck Institute in Stuttgart, Osaka University, and Paris VII University.
Professor and Rector
In 1992, Aaviksoo became a professor at the University of Tartu, specializing in optics and spectroscopy. He served as the Rector of the University from 1992 to 1995, overseeing a period of significant growth and modernization.
Political Career
Aaviksoo's foray into politics began in 1995 when he was appointed Minister of Culture and Education in the government of Tiit Vähi. He continued as Minister of Education until 1997.
In 1998, Aaviksoo returned to the University of Tartu as Rector, a position he held until 2006. During this time, he also served as the head of the Institute of Experimental Physics and Technology.
Return to Politics
In 2006, Aaviksoo resumed his political career, joining the Union of Fatherland and Res Publica party. He was elected to the Estonian Parliament in 2007 and became Minister of Defense in 2007 under Prime Minister Andrus Ansip.
Minister of Education
Following the 2011 parliamentary elections, Aaviksoo was appointed Minister of Education in Ansip's third-term government. He held this position until 2014.
Later Years
After leaving politics, Aaviksoo returned to the University of Tartu as a professor. He has continued to engage in research and has published extensively in the fields of optics and spectroscopy.
Recognition and Legacy
Throughout his career, Aaviksoo has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to science and education. He is a member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences and has been recognized as an outstanding teacher and scientist.
