Jack Dempsey - A Legendary Boxer
Jack Dempsey, born as William Harrison, was an American professional boxer and the heavyweight world champion. Coming from a humble background, Dempsey started his career as a laborer in the mines. In 1914, he was offered a small sum to participate in a boxing match, and he agreed, taking the name Kid Black for the ring. With his Irish and Native American heritage, Dempsey had the strength, temperament, and determination to excel in the sport.
Rise to Success
From 1915 to 1916, Dempsey fought in 29 matches, losing only 2 and knocking out 18 opponents. He became known for his close-range fighting skills, incredible punching power, agility, and quickness, earning him the nickname "Jack the Tiger." His breakthrough came in 1918 when he defeated Fred Fulton, a heavyweight contender. This victory silenced doubters and established Dempsey as a boxer with a promising future.
World Heavyweight Champion
In 1919, Dempsey faced the formidable Jess Willard in a match that few believed he could win. Willard weighed 111 kg and stood at 198 cm tall, towering over Dempsey. However, Dempsey's speed, aggression, and devastating punches led to a third-round knockout victory, solidifying his position as the world champion. He successfully defended his title five more times, earning record-breaking earnings through his promoter, J. Rickard.
Life after Boxing
After retiring from boxing, Dempsey ventured into business and became the owner of a prestigious restaurant in New York. He also worked as a boxing and wrestling referee and served in the Coast Guard during World War II, training soldiers in physical fitness. Dempsey's contributions to the sport were recognized when he was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 1954. He published his autobiography in 1977, shedding light on his remarkable career and accomplishments.
Legacy and Last Years
Dempsey revolutionized boxing with his tactical skills, developing effective techniques and strategies. His "Dempsey Roll," a combination counterattack move, is still used in the sport. Even in his later years, Dempsey maintained remarkable physical fitness. In 1977, at the age of 82, he apprehended two thieves who tried to steal from his wife, demonstrating his enduring strength and integrity.
Jack Dempsey passed away in 1983, leaving behind a lasting legacy as one of the greatest boxers in history. His impact on the sport, both inside and outside the ring, will always be remembered.
