Jack Hanna, born John Bushnell Hanna on January 2, 1947, in the United States, is a renowned zookeeper who has received numerous awards and recognition for his work.
Early Life and Education
Jack Hanna was born on a small farm near Knoxville and developed a love for animals from a young age. This passion led him to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. After completing high school, Hanna enrolled at Muskingum College in Ohio, where he studied economics and politics. He graduated with a degree in these fields in 1965. Throughout his college years, Hanna continued to care for animals, keeping several ducks in his dorm room.
Entrepreneurial Ventures
In 1969, Hanna married his college cheerleader, Suzi, and together they opened their own pet store and small farm, specializing in breeding ferrets. The farm also housed a variety of other animals, including wild tigers, lions, monkeys, and horses. However, a lion attack on a friend visiting the farm resulted in legal troubles and a hefty fine. As a result, Hanna decided to close the farm and relocated with his family to Florida.
Career in Zoos
In Florida, Hanna found employment at the Sanford Zoo and later was offered a position at the Central Florida Zoo in 1973. In 1978, he moved to Columbus, Ohio, where he was offered a prominent role at the local zoo. Over the years, Hanna worked his way up to become the director of the zoo, constantly striving to improve and expand the facilities for the animals. His deep love for animals motivated him to create exceptional living conditions and promote successful breeding programs.
Television and Writing Career
From 1981 to 1983, Jack Hanna hosted his own television show, "Hanna's Ark," which was broadcasted on CBS. He also made appearances on the popular show "Good Morning America." During his tenure as the director of the Columbus Zoo, Hanna oversaw significant expansion and improvements, leading to a 400% increase in attendance. This became one of his greatest achievements.
In 1989, Hanna published his autobiography, and since 1997, he has hosted the television show "Jack Hanna's Animal Adventures." He frequently appears on television as an animal expert, sharing his knowledge and passion for wildlife.
