Biography of Jack Kemp
Early Life and EducationJack Kemp, a well-known American politician, Republican, former candidate for US president, and professional football player, was born on July 13, 1935, in Los Angeles, California. He was the third of four children born to Francis Elizabeth, a teacher, and Paul Robert Kemp, a transportation worker. Kemp grew up and received his education in Los Angeles, attending Fairfax High School. At school, he formed friendships with many students from Jewish families and became a staunch defender of the Jewish nation. In his free time, Kemp led a moderate lifestyle and enjoyed reading philosophical and historical books.
College and Football Career
In 1953, Kemp enrolled at Occidental College, where he soon founded the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, a sports association within the NCAA Division III. He was respected not only for his intellect and discipline but also for his excellent physical fitness, as he was a talented football player. After graduating from college in 1957 with a degree in physical education, Kemp entered graduate school. That same year, he married Joan Main, the daughter of a teacher and football coach, who was also a student at Occidental College. They went on to have two sons and two daughters, who later blessed them with 17 grandchildren.
Football Achievements
Initially, Jack Kemp focused his attention on his football career. As a player in the NFL, he achieved considerable success. However, numerous injuries during matches forced him to retire from professional sports in the late 1960s. Kemp's name was later included in the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame and the Buffalo Bills' Wall of Fame. Additionally, in 1992, he received the Theodore Roosevelt Award, and in 2006, he was named one of the Top 100 Student-Athletes.
Political Career
Jack Kemp's political career began long before he retired from football. In the early 1960s, he participated in various political campaigns. In 1967, he collaborated with representatives of Ronald Reagan, and in 1969, he served as a special assistant in the Republican Party. In the early 1970s, Kemp's active political involvement began. He served in Congress for a long time and gained a good reputation. By 1984, he was already being considered as a candidate for the US presidency. In 1988, Kemp ran for president, and in 1996, he presented his own candidacy for the vice presidency of the United States.
Later Life and Legacy
Jack Kemp passed away on May 2, 2009, from cancer. Throughout his life, he was known for his dedication to both sports and politics. Kemp's contributions to American football and his influential political career have left a lasting legacy.
