Biography of Jack Markell
Jack A. Markell was born in 1960 in Centerville, Delaware. He grew up in Newark, Delaware and graduated from Newark High School. He went on to attend Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where he earned a degree in economics. He also holds a degree from the University of Chicago.
Early Career
Before being elected as the Governor of Delaware, Markell served as the State Treasurer of Delaware. He also worked for Comcast Corporation and First Chicago Corporation. As State Treasurer, Markell was reelected for three terms, serving from 1999 to 2009. During his tenure, he implemented innovative programs in education, such as the establishment of The Delaware Money School. He also spearheaded successful healthcare programs like Health Rewards and achieved tax reductions for the state.
Gubernatorial Election
In 2007, Markell announced his candidacy for Governor of Delaware as a member of the Democratic Party. He faced Republican candidate William Swain Lee in the election and won by a wide margin. Markell received over $1.5 million in campaign contributions from more than 3,000 individuals. His victory was expected as Delaware traditionally votes for Democratic candidates.
Governorship
Markell assumed office as Governor in 2008, inheriting a significant state debt of $800 million. As one of his first acts, he voluntarily reduced his own salary by 20%. In addition to this personal sacrifice, Markell implemented various economically sound measures to reduce the budget deficit, including energy conservation initiatives, collaboration with small businesses, and the revival of Delaware's industrial sector. Notably, he played a key role in the reopening of an automobile manufacturing plant in Wilmington, preserving jobs and facilitating the production of hybrid vehicles.

Governor Jack Markell is highly regarded by the residents of Delaware. He is married to Carla, whom he met while in school, and they have a son and a daughter. The family resides in Wilmington.
