Early Life and EducationNed Lamont, born into a prominent Democratic family in New York City, attended prestigious institutions throughout his academic career. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1972, obtained his bachelor's from Harvard in 1976, and earned an MBA from Yale University in 1980.
Business Ventures and Political Beginnings
After a brief stint at a local newspaper, Lamont founded Lamont Digital Systems (later Campus Televideo) in 1984. The company specialized in satellite and telecommunications services for universities and colleges. He also served on the Greenwich Board of Selectmen, Finance Board, and State Investment Advisory Council.
Senatorial Campaign and 2018 Gubernatorial Victory
In 2006, Lamont challenged incumbent Senator Joe Lieberman in the Democratic primary, ultimately losing to Lieberman as an independent candidate. However, in 2018, he secured a resounding victory over Republican Bob Stefanowski in the Connecticut gubernatorial election.
Key Policy Proposals and Accomplishments
During his gubernatorial campaign, Lamont pledged to implement tolls on trucks, eliminate the motor fuel tax and sales tax on clothing, and reduce property taxes. He also supported decriminalizing small amounts of marijuana, raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour, and establishing paid family and medical leave at the state level.
To address the state's budget deficit, Lamont proposed curtailing pension rights for state employees by reducing the number of working retirees and capping pension amounts. He also legalized sports betting, a move aimed at generating additional revenue.
