Jacky Ickx is a renowned Belgian racing driver who has achieved great success in various prestigious competitions, including Formula 1, the Dakar Rally, and many others. He was born on January 1, 1945, and from an early age, he developed a keen interest in racing thanks to his father, who was a sports journalist and actively involved him in motorsports by even buying him a motorcycle.
Early Career
In the mid-1960s, Jacky Ickx began participating in races and quickly achieved success. In 1965, he won his first prize in a car racing competition in Belgium. In 1967, Ickx caught the attention of the Tyrrell team and was invited to join them. The team competed in Formula 2 using French-made Matra cars. Despite being considered an underdog, Ickx won two prizes and became the European champion. During this time, he also competed in Formula 1, joining the Cooper team.
Formula 1 Career
In 1968, Ickx signed a contract with the Scuderia Ferrari team and made a successful debut. He was preparing for the Canadian Grand Prix with hopes of performing well, but unfortunately, he suffered a serious injury during practice, forcing him to miss not only that race but also subsequent ones. Despite this setback, he participated in several races afterward, showcasing his talent. In 1969, Ickx became a member of the Brabham team, competing in Formula 1. Initially playing a supporting role, he took the lead after the team's first driver, Jack Brabham, was injured in an accident. Ickx then won the German and Canadian races and became the vice-champion of the world in 1969. He also won the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans race in the same year.
Later Career
During the 1970s, Ickx continued to compete actively and remained in the spotlight, despite facing some ups and downs in terms of success. He was involved in several accidents throughout his career. In the 1980s and almost until the end of the 1990s, Jacky Ickx competed in various races, driving cars of different models.
