Education and Early Career
In 1915, Yakov Ludvigovich Geronimus enrolled in the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Kharkov University. He interrupted his studies in 1918 to serve as a volunteer in the Red Army's medical corps. After completing his military service, Geronimus resumed his studies and graduated in 1920.
Academic Career
From 1920 to 1930, Geronimus taught at the Kharkov Technological Institute, becoming a professor in 1929. In 1930, he moved to the newly established Kharkov Aviation Institute and headed the Department of Theoretical Mechanics.
From 1934 to 1944, Geronimus held similar professorial positions at the Kharkov Electrotechnical Institute, Moscow Aviation Institute, and Kuibyshev Aviation Institute. In 1944, he returned to the Kharkov Aviation Institute and continued to lead the Department of Theoretical Mechanics until 1972.
Research Contributions
Geronimus made significant contributions to the field of theoretical and applied mechanics. He published seven monographs, including "Theory of Orthogonal Polynomials" (1950), "Polynomials Orthogonal on a Circle and an Interval" (1958), and "Dynamic Synthesis of Mechanisms by Chebyshev's Method" (1958).
Popularization of Russian Mechanics
In 1952, Geronimus authored a popularization work titled "Essays on the Works of Pioneers in Russian Mechanics" (520 pages). The book examines the contributions of P. D. Chebyshev, N. E. Zhukovsky, I. A. Vyshnegradsky, O. I. Somov, S. V. Kovalevskaya, and other prominent Russian scientists.
Recognition and Honors
Geronimus was recognized for his scientific achievements. In 1978, he received the title "Honored Scientist and Engineer of the Ukrainian SSR."
