Early Life and Education
Radu Balescu was born in Bucharest, Romania. He attended Titu Maiorescu High School (1943-1948) and Athénée Royal d'Ixelles (1948-1950).
University Years
Balescu studied chemistry at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and earned his doctorate in 1958. His doctoral research focused on the statistical physics of charged particles.
Academic Career
Balescu began his academic career in 1957 as an assistant at the Service de Physique Théorique et Mathématique of the Université Libre de Bruxelles, working alongside Ilya Prigogine. He became a professor in 1964.
Research and Accomplishments
Balescu's research centered on the statistical physics of charged particles and the transport theory of magnetically confined plasmas. He developed the Balescu-Lenard collision operator, which is widely used in plasma physics.
Honors and Recognition
Balescu received numerous accolades for his contributions to physics:1970: Francqui Prize in Exact Sciences
