Despite envisioning herself as a tragedienne, Maillan's first experience on stage in the tragedy "Athalie" by Jean Racine elicited laughter from the audience instead of the expected emotional response. This incident taught Maillan an important lesson, prompting her to bid farewell to tragedy forever.
