Early Life and EducationPaolo Villaggio was born in Genoa, Italy, on December 30, 1932. His childhood was marked by the hardships of World War II. After attending Andrea Doria High School, Villaggio held various jobs, including waiter, BBC announcer, and clerk.
Breakthrough in Comedy
Villaggio's comedic talent was discovered by Maurizio Costanzo, who invited him to perform at a Roman cabaret in 1967. From there, Villaggio moved to television, where he created iconic characters such as Professor Kranz, Giandomenico Fracchia, and Fantozzi.
The Fantozzi Phenomenon
In 1971, Villaggio published a book of short stories featuring the character of Ugo Fantozzi, an unlucky accountant. The book's success led to a series of ten films starring Villaggio as Fantozzi. The character became immensely popular, inspiring phrases and expressions that became part of Italian vernacular.

Villaggio also appeared in numerous other comedies, often portraying characters similar to Fantozzi.
