Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier, born on January 6, 1745, in Annonay, France, was the younger of two brothers who revolutionized the field of aviation.

Early Life and Career

Initially pursuing a career in architecture, Montgolfier later inherited his father's papermaking enterprise and became a notable figure in the manufacturing of vellum paper. However, his true calling lay in the exploration of the skies.

Birth of the Air Balloon

In 1782, together with his elder brother, Joseph-Michel, Jacques-Étienne began experimenting with hot air balloons. Their initial model, a small silk balloon, was fueled by burning paper beneath its opening, causing it to ascend towards the ceiling.

Public Demonstration

On June 5, 1783, the brothers publicly unveiled their invention in Annonay. A linen-constructed, unmanned balloon successfully ascended before a captivated audience.

Animal Ascent and Human Flight

Just months later, on September 19, 1783, the Montgolfiers launched a balloon carrying three animal passengers: a sheep, a rooster, and a duck. The creatures safely descended after eight minutes in the air. This remarkable experiment earned the brothers widespread acclaim, leading to the coining of the term "Montgolfier" for all hot air balloons.

The First Human Flight

On November 21, 1783, history was made with the first human flight in a balloon. Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and François Laurent d'Arlandes took to the skies in a Montgolfier balloon, soaring for 25 minutes and covering a distance of approximately 9 kilometers.

Legacy

Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier passed away on August 2, 1799, leaving behind an enduring legacy. His pioneering work in aerostatics paved the way for future advancements in aviation and the exploration of the upper atmosphere. Despite being denied the opportunity to make a personal flight, his contributions to the field remained immense, forever associating his name with the marvels of hot air ballooning.
