Isaac Antcher: A French Painter with a Moldavian Heritage

Early Life and Education

Isaac Antcher was born in 1899 in the Bessarabian village of Peresechina (Perecechina), now part of Moldova, to a family of merchants. In 1920, he joined his brother in France, settling in Calais. From 1921, he studied at the Bezalel School of Fine Arts in Jerusalem under renowned artists Boris Schatz, Abel Pann, and Zeev Raban. In 1924, he returned to France and continued his training at the Académie La Grand Chaumière in Paris.

Struggle and Resilience

To make ends meet, Antcher took on various menial jobs, including floor cleaning, working at the Renault automobile factory, and tutoring French and Hebrew. Despite his financial struggles, his passion for painting remained strong.

Military Service and Internment

In 1939, Antcher volunteered for the French army. The following year, he returned to Montpellier, but in 1943, he fled to neutral Switzerland, where he was interned in a labor camp.

Post-War Career and Exhibitions

After the war, Antcher settled in Paris once again. He held numerous solo exhibitions in cities such as Montpellier, Paris, Brussels, Bern, Strasbourg, Tel Aviv, and Jerusalem, showcasing his unique and captivating artistic style.
