Jacques Étienne Victor Arago: A Life in Adventure and the Arts
Jacques Étienne Victor Arago (1790-1855) was a renowned French dramatist, writer, artist, and traveler. He was the brother of prominent physicist and astronomer François Arago and Étienne Arago, who also gained fame as a playwright.
Around the Globe with Captain Freycinet (1817)
In 1817, Arago embarked on a three-year expedition as a draftsman aboard the ship "Uranie" led by Captain Louis de Freycinet. During this voyage, he circumnavigated the globe, visiting Australia, New Guinea, the Admiralty Islands, the Caroline Islands, and the island of Guam.
Disastrous Return (1820)
After spending three months in the Mariana Islands, the expedition sailed to the Hawaiian Islands, the Samoan archipelago, and the Cook Islands. They returned to Australia for a month before setting sail for home. However, their ship, the "Uranie," was wrecked off the Falkland Islands. Despite the setback, the expedition members safely returned to France in November 1820.
Literary and Theatrical Pursuits
Upon his return to France, Arago became involved in the publication of satirical magazines. From 1823 to 1828, he worked in Bordeaux, and from 1829 onwards, he based himself in Toulouse. In 1835, he was appointed director of the theater in Rouen.
Travels Despite Disability
Despite losing most of his eyesight, Arago continued his activities as a theater director and playwright. He also undertook journeys to the New World. His travelogues, such as "Souvenirs d'un aveugle, voyage autour du monde" (1839), provide valuable historical insights.
