Paul Van Himst: A Belgian Football Legend

Early Life and Career

Born in Ixelles, Belgium, Paul Van Himst began his football journey with his local club. In 1966, he made his professional debut with Anderlecht, where he immediately emerged as a key player. Van Himst aided Anderlecht in claiming the league title in his first season.

Success with Anderlecht and Racing White

In 1967, Anderlecht triumphed in the inaugural Toulon Tournament, and Van Himst earned the tournament's MVP award. He secured another championship title with Anderlecht in the 1967-1968 season but later sought more playing time elsewhere.

In 1971, Van Himst joined Racing White, a club eager to compete in European competitions. He became a prolific scorer, helping Racing White achieve a record fourth-place finish and their first European Cup qualification. The team consistently placed third in the league over the following seasons.

Triumph with Molenbeek

In 1973, Racing White merged with Daring to form Molenbeek. Van Himst played a pivotal role in the club's stunning championship victory in the 1974-1975 season, scoring 19 goals and leading Molenbeek to its first and only league title.

European Success and Later Career

Molenbeek reached the quarterfinals of the UEFA Cup the following year, their best European performance. Van Himst concluded his Molenbeek tenure in 1976 and signed with newly promoted Louviéroise. He played two seasons with the club before retiring after a relegation in the 1978-1979 season.

International Career

Van Himst made his international debut for Belgium in 1970. He was part of the team that won bronze at the 1972 European Championship, although he did not play in the tournament. His lone goal for Belgium came in a European Championship qualifier against Iceland in 1974. He earned a total of 13 caps for his country.

Legacy

After his retirement from football, Van Himst pursued acting and played a football legend in the 2012 film "Le monde nous appartient" ("The World Belongs to Us"). He passed away in 2024 at the age of 78, leaving an indelible mark on Belgian football history.
