Sergio Batista: Argentinian Footballing Legend
Early Life and Club CareerSergio Batista, an Argentinian football icon, emerged from the golden era of the 1980s club "Argentinos Juniors." As a key player, he contributed to the team's unprecedented double triumph of the Argentinian Championship (1984, 1985) and victory in the Copa Libertadores (1985). After becoming a World Cup champion, Batista moved to "River Plate," where he secured another national title in 1989/90. His illustrious club career culminated in 1999 with "All Boys."
International Career
From 1985 to 1990, Batista proudly represented Argentina on the international stage. He participated in two World Cups, emerging as a champion in 1986 and a runner-up in 1990. Additionally, he featured in two Copa America tournaments, achieving third place in 1989.
Coaching Career
Immediately following his retirement as a player, Batista embarked on a coaching career with Uruguayan club "Bella Vista." He later guided his former club "Argentinos Juniors" and coached several other Argentinian teams. However, his crowning achievement came in 2008 when he led the Argentinian Olympic team to victory in Beijing.
National Team Coach
In 2010, Batista was appointed as the head coach of the Argentinian national team until 2014. Despite hosting the Copa America in 2011, the team's quarterfinal elimination against Uruguay on penalties proved to be a disappointing result for Batista. Dissatisfied with the team's performance, he resigned from his coaching position on July 26, 2011.
Club Coach
Following his departure from the national team, Batista ventured into international club coaching. He became the head coach of Chinese club "Shanghai Shenhua" in 2012 and the Bahrain national team in 2015.
