Biography of Jagdish Chandra Mahindra

Jagdish Chandra Mahindra was an Indian entrepreneur and industrialist, and one of the founders of the company 'Mahindra & Mahindra'. He was born in Ludhiana, Punjab, India, and was the eldest of nine children.

Early Life and Education

Jagdish believed in the importance of receiving a decent education and closely monitored the academic progress of his siblings. His efforts did not go in vain, as he eventually managed to send his brother K.C. Mahindra to study at Cambridge. Jagdish himself attended Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute in Mumbai, one of the top engineering institutes in India.

Career

Jagdish Chandra Mahindra applied his acquired skills in his role as a sales manager at 'Tata Steel' from 1929 to 1940. During World War II, the steel industry became a key sector in the overall industrial landscape, and it was during this time that the Indian government appointed Mahindra as the Chief Controller of Steel Quality.

Entrepreneurship

The acquisition of independence by India, like many of his compatriots, radically changed Mahindra's life. Recognizing the potential that the country now offered, Jagdish, along with his brother K.C. Mahindra and Ghulam Mohammed, a Pakistani businessman, founded the company 'Mahindra & Mohammad'. After Ghulam Mohammed returned to Pakistan and pursued a career in politics, the firm was renamed 'Mahindra & Mahindra'. Under the skillful management of the brothers, the first major steel company in Mumbai grew into a nationwide corporation.

Legacy

Jagdish Chandra Mahindra passed away in 1951 at the age of 59 due to a heart attack. His death was a great loss to the industry and his family. Witnesses attested to the strong bond and mutual trust between Jagdish and his brother K.C. Mahindra. His entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to education continue to inspire future generations.
