Early Life and Education
Jagdish Natwarlal Bhagwati (born July 26, 1934)is an Indian economist and Professor of Economics and Law at Columbia University.
Bhagwati hails from a Gujarati family in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from St. John's College, Cambridge in 1956. He then pursued a doctorate in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which he received in 1967.
Academic Career
After earning his doctorate, Bhagwati joined the faculty of MIT as an economics professor and remained there from 1968 to 1980. He is currently a Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations.
Research and Advocacy
Bhagwati is renowned for his research in international trade and advocacy for free trade. He has served as an advisor to the World Trade Organization, the United Nations, and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade.
Globalization and Development
Bhagwati has been a vocal supporter of globalization and has argued for its benefits in reducing poverty and improving living standards. In his book "In Defense of Globalization," he defends the process against criticism from anti-globalization activists.
