Lev Dobriansky: Ukrainian-American Scholar and Diplomat
Early Life and EducationLev Dobriansky was an American historian, economist, and professor. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree and taught economics at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Among his students was Kateryna Yushchenko, the future First Lady of Ukraine.
Ukrainian Advocacy
Dobriansky served as the long-time president of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America. He played a pivotal role in lobbying American lawmakers and the government to support Ukraine's independence from the Soviet Union. He also worked tirelessly to promote Ukrainian identity and culture worldwide.
Congressional Resolutions
Dobriansky initiated the annual tradition of commemorating the "Captive Nations Week Resolution" in the U.S. Congress. This resolution raised awareness about the plight of national minorities in the USSR, including Ukrainians. He was also instrumental in erecting a monument to Taras Shevchenko in the American capital.
Diplomatic Career
During the Reagan administration, Lev Dobriansky served as the U.S. Ambassador to the Bahamas for four years. He also worked as a consultant to the State Department, Department of Defense, and other U.S. government agencies.
Legacy
Dobriansky's daughter, Paula Dobriansky, served as Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs during the George W. Bush administration. His legacy as a scholar, diplomat, and advocate for Ukrainian independence continues to inspire and influence Ukrainian-Americans and the international community.
