Early Life and Education
Alexander Nikolaevich Troshin was born on September 6, 1937, in the village of Sokuluk, Kyrgyzstan, to Nikolai Dmitrievich and Daria Semyonovna Troshin. Despite being born in Kyrgyzstan, both of his parents were originally from Russia. Troshin's family relocated to another region of Kyrgyzstan when he was 12 years old, leaving him in the care of his grandmother, Maria Petrovna Sotnikova. She instilled in him the importance of self-reliance and education, values that would shape his future.
After graduating high school with honors, Troshin initially aspired to become a naval officer. However, under the influence of his uncle, he changed his path and enrolled in the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI), where he pursued a degree in economics in 1955. He graduated with distinction in 1960, receiving recognition from Dean Sergei A. Sarkisian.
Academic Career at MAI
After graduating, Troshin joined the faculty of MAI as an assistant in the Department of Organization of Machine Processing of Economic Information. In 1962, he enrolled in a postgraduate program, and two years later, he successfully defended his candidate's dissertation on schedule. Troshin then embarked on his academic and administrative advancement. He became an associate professor in 1968 and was appointed head of the Department of Organization of Machine Processing of Economic Information in 1970, becoming the youngest department head in MAI's history. In 1976, he earned his Doctorate in Economics, and in 1978, he was promoted to the rank of professor.
Government Service
Troshin's career took a new turn in March 1979 when he was appointed Head of the Department of Universities and Technical Colleges at the State Planning Commission of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (Goсплан РСФСР). He later served as Head of the Consolidated Department of Science and Technology of Goсплаn РСФСР and Head of the Department of Education, Culture, and Health at the State Planning Commission of the USSR.
In 1988, Troshin became Deputy Chairman of Goсплаn СССР, where he played a pivotal role in optimizing the distribution of resources and managing their rational use. He oversaw the funding for the establishment of numerous higher education institutions, including the University of Krasnoyarsk and the University of Tyumen. He also focused on addressing the challenges of education and social development in regions such as Central Asia and the Caucasus.
Post-Soviet Era
Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the emergence of the market economy, Troshin returned to MAI in 1992 and established the unique Department of Investment Economics. However, in 1993, he re-entered government service as First Deputy Minister of Economy of the Russian Federation. He resigned from this position in 1994, expressing disagreement with the economic reform policies of then-Minister of Economy, Yegor Gaidar.
Soon after, Troshin was appointed Deputy Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation. In this role, he actively contributed to the development of Russia's economic security strategy, which was approved by President Boris Yeltsin in 1995.
In 1996, Troshin was awarded the rank of Actual State Councilor of the Russian Federation, First Class. He continued to lead the Department of Investment Economics at MAI from 1997 onwards, overseeing the development of new curricula and programs, including the Master's program in Management.
Recognition and Awards
Throughout his career, Troshin has received numerous awards and honors in recognition of his contributions to the fields of economics and education. In 1987, he was awarded the honorary title "Honored Economist of the Russian Federation." He is also a full member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. Troshin has also been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour, four medals, and other distinctions.
Personal Life
Alexander Nikolaevich Troshin is married to Lidia Evgenievna Troshin, a candidate of economic sciences and an associate professor at MAI. They have two sons, Alexei and Sergei, who are successful in the business world. His grandchildren, Alexander and Alexei, continue the family's legacy of academic and professional achievement.
Troshin enjoys fishing, mushroom picking, and reading. He currently resides and works in Moscow.
