James Stillman Rockefeller: Olympic Champion, Banker, and Rockefeller Heir

Early Life and Education
James Stillman Rockefeller was born on June 8, 1902, to a prominent family. He was the grandson of William Rockefeller, co-founder of Standard Oil. Rockefeller attended Yale University, graduating in 1924.
Military Service and Career
During World War II, Rockefeller served in the paratroopers. After the war, he pursued a career in banking. In 1930, he joined the National City Bank, eventually rising to the positions of president in 1952 and chairman of the board seven years later. The bank later became Citibank and, after merging with Travelers Group in 1998, formed Citigroup, the world's largest banking corporation.
Olympic Glory
Rockefeller's true passion was sports. He was the coxswain of the Yale University crew that won gold at the 1924 Paris Olympics, making him the oldest living Olympic medalist in the United States. His winning team also included Yale alumnus Benjamin Spock, who later became a renowned pediatrician.
Family and Legacy
Rockefeller, who died in 2023 at the age of 102, is survived by his grandchildren. They have shared that the Olympic gold medal and oars from the victorious race hold a place of honor in his home. "I think he was really proud of that, more than his banking career," said Stillman Rockefeller.
Rockefeller's life story is a testament to his accomplishments in both business and athletics, as well as his humble pride in his Olympic victory.
