Jacob Sullivan: The Architect of American Foreign Policy
Early Life and EducationJacob Jeremiah Sullivan was born in Burlington, Vermont, and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Yale University in 1998, a Master of Philosophy in international relations from Oxford University in 2000, and a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School in 2003.
Early Career
Sullivan began his career as an editor for the Oxford International Review, Yale Law Journal, and Yale Daily News. He later served as a clerk for the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States, and as an attorney at the law firm Faegre & Benson. He also taught law as an adjunct professor at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota.
Political Career
Advising Presidential CandidatesIn 2006, Sullivan joined the campaign of Amy Klobuchar, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate from Minnesota, as her legal and policy adviser. He later worked on Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign, advising her on debate strategy. After Clinton lost the primaries to Barack Obama, Sullivan became an adviser on Obama's campaign.
Obama Administration
After Obama's election, Sullivan served as deputy chief of staff to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He also led the State Department's Office of Policy Planning from 2011 to 2013 and was national security adviser to Vice President Joseph Biden from 2013 to 2014.
Sullivan played a key role in shaping the Obama administration's foreign policy decisions, including on Libya, Syria, and Myanmar. He was also involved in the negotiations that led to the Iran nuclear deal in 2015.
Post-Government Work
After leaving government, Sullivan taught law as an adjunct professor at Yale Law School. In 2015, he joined Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign as her foreign policy adviser.
Biden Administration
Sullivan served as a senior adviser to Joe Biden during his 2020 presidential campaign. After Biden's election, he was appointed National Security Adviser on November 23, 2020, and assumed office on January 20, 2021. He is the youngest person to hold the position since its creation in 1953.
Views on Foreign Policy
Sullivan believes that the primary goal of U.S. foreign policy should be "to ensure and sustain America's global leadership." He is a proponent of a tough stance on Iran and has been critical of the Trump administration's foreign policy, which he believes has led to America's isolationism and diminished influence.
Personal Life
Sullivan is married to Margaret Goodlander, a former adviser to senators Joe Lieberman and John McCain.
