Early Life and Career: The Towering German Giant
Jacob Nacken, the towering German soldier and circus performer, was born in 1906 in Düsseldorf. Towering at 2.21 meters (7'3"), he surpassed even his family's already impressive height. From an early age, his extraordinary stature propelled him into the world of show business. As a teenager, he joined a traveling circus, where he performed as "Uranus" and the "Rhine Giant." He reigned as Germany's tallest citizen and one of the world's most towering figures.
Record-Setting Soldier in the Wehrmacht
Recruited into the German army in the late 1930s, Nacken became the tallest soldier in its history. His enormous size earned him notoriety, but it also brought challenges. His massive feet required size 50 shoes, and he endured constant bumps and bruises from low doorways designed for average-sized individuals.
In 1944, tragedy struck when Nacken and his artillery unit were captured at Calais, France. He spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner of war in Britain. An iconic photograph of a 5'3" Canadian soldier capturing the towering Nacken circulated widely in newspapers.
Post-War Immigration and American Fame
In 1950, Nacken and his wife immigrated to the United States, following his sister. His colossal stature opened doors to unique opportunities. He became a popular Santa Claus, beloved by children who could fit under his towering frame. He made numerous television appearances, including "That Tall Jacob," garnering admiration and awe wherever he went.
Nacken passed away at the age of 82 in a European city. His legacy as the tallest soldier of the Wehrmacht and an unforgettable giant of the entertainment world lives on.
