Biography of James Carlisle
James Carlisle is an Antiguan dentist and political figure, who served as the Governor-General of Antigua and Barbuda. He is a member of the International Association for Laser Dentistry and the British Dental Association. Carlisle was appointed as Prime Minister by Vero Cornwall Bird on June 10, 1993, becoming the first indigenous Prime Minister since Antigua and Barbuda gained independence from Britain. He served in this position for fourteen years, stepping down on June 30, 2007.
Early Life and Education
James Carlisle was born in the village of Bolans, Antigua. He pursued his education in the United Kingdom and obtained a bachelor's degree in dentistry from the University of Dundee. He also completed his training at the American School of Laser Dentistry. Carlisle practiced as a dentist in both Antigua, where he was one of four dentists on the island, and in the United Kingdom. Despite facing stiff competition in his homeland, Carlisle managed to establish a strong reputation in the field.
Political Career
With the support of former Prime Minister Vero Bird, who was also one of his patients, Carlisle developed a program to provide children with necessary fluoride and implemented a system of free dental care. He served in the British Royal Air Force from 1961 to 1966 and later transferred to the Royal Defense Force of Antigua and Barbuda between 1983 and 1993. As the Governor-General, he also held the position of Commander of the Defense Force of Antigua and Barbuda.
Carlisle was actively involved in the local political and social scene. He served as the chairman of the local council overseeing national parks but resigned from this position when he was nominated for the role of Governor-General. In his capacity as Governor-General, Carlisle was the head of state and the official representative of the queen.
Personal Life
Sir James Carlisle is married to Lady Emma Carlisle, who actively raised funds from commercial organizations for the benefit of indigenous people during her time as the spouse of the Governor-General. Carlisle is a devout Seventh-day Adventist and does not perform any official duties on Saturdays or serve alcohol to guests at official receptions. This aspect of his beliefs occasionally posed challenges, such as when he had to attend Prince Charles' wedding at the Windsor Registry Office on a Saturday and partake in champagne.
