James Corbett: The First World Boxing Champion

James Corbett, also known as Gentleman Jim, was the first world boxing champion in gloves. Born in 1866, Corbett achieved his historic victory at the age of 26 when he knocked out John Sullivan in the twenty-first round. Corbett's win was not surprising, as he was eight years younger than the champion and significantly better prepared.

Revolutionizing Boxing Training Methods

Corbett revolutionized the training methods for boxers by introducing new techniques and incorporating various sports, particularly track and field, into their preparation. He invented and utilized the punching bag, introduced jump rope exercises, and became the first advocate for a rigorous training regime.

Corbett strongly opposed the consumption of alcohol and tobacco by athletes, a rare stance during that time. His dedication to maintaining a disciplined lifestyle set him apart from his contemporaries.

The Historic Fight with Sullivan

The fight between Corbett and Sullivan took place on September 7, 1892, in New Orleans. The gloves used in the match weighed five ounces. To generate excitement and ignite passion among the spectators, a tempting prize of $25,000 was announced.

Protecting the Title and Later Defeats

After winning the world championship, James Corbett carefully guarded his title by avoiding risky matches. It was only on March 17, 1897, that he suffered defeat in a bout against Robert Fitzsimmons, who was allowed to compete after acquiring American citizenship. This fight was the first boxing match ever captured on film.

Corbett made two more unsuccessful attempts to reclaim the championship title in matches against James Jeffries. On May 11, 1900, Jeffries knocked him out in the twenty-third round, and then again on August 14, 1903, in the tenth round. Following this defeat, James Corbett retired from boxing.
