Early Career and Formula 1
British racing driver John Watson began his career in Formula Ford. In 1974, he acquired a March 73B chassis and claimed the Formula Atlantic runner-up title. He joined Lotus as a test driver in 1975 and made two Formula 1 appearances without scoring points.
Departure from Racing and Toyota Programs
In 1976, Watson retired from racing and moved to Switzerland, where he participated in various racing programs organized by Toyota.
Return to Racing and Championship Success
Watson returned to racing in 1979 as a Formula Atlantic driver. He won the British Formula 2 Championship in 1980 and competed in the European Formula 2 Championship the following year. In 1982, he captured the British Formula 1 Championship and the Can-Am Series runner-up title.
CART Debut and Subsequent Career
Watson made his CART debut in 1984 and spent two full seasons in the series. He later returned to compete only in the Indianapolis 500, except for one CART race in Phoenix in 1990.
Retirement and Later Life
After a disappointing qualifying attempt in the 1995 Indianapolis 500, Watson ended his racing career and settled in Florida. In his final years, he worked as a fishing boat captain.
